SPD-U Presents: Student Portfolio Reviews – Summer 2017

WHO: For all student levels and recent grads.
WHAT: Bring your portfolio whether it’s finished or still in the works…you’ll get one-on-one reviews with some of our best pros! Please note, your work has to be in print form or as a PDF on a laptop/iPad. We won’t have the ability to look at online portfolios. No flash drives or disks please.
WHEN: Thursday, June 15, 2017 / 6:00 – 8:00pm | Registration closes on Wednesday, June 14th at 5PM EST.
WHERE: Inc. Magazine Offices, Downtown NYC (Exact address will be given to you in your confirmation email)
HOW MUCH:
• If you’re an SPD student member, your entry is free! However, you must reserve your spot by using the form below.
• If you’re not a current member, join now and you can come for free too. Use the form below to become a member and reserve your spot for the reviews.

Eddie Opara, Weigine Wang & Lisa Maldonado

Last night Weigine Wang & Lisa Maldonado met Eddie Opara at the free lecture sponsored by NYU Leslie eLab.

Weigine wrote…Thank you for posting the announcement of the lecture on the blog–the event was amazing and I learned a lot!! At the end of the talk, my classmate Lisa and I asked Mr. Opara to have our photo taken together–which was nice. I hope there will be more interesting events coming soon!

We’re calling it the Rarebit Animation Festival, as a tribute to former Sheepshead Bay legend Winsor McCay.  It’s open to work created in the past few years (2015) up through this Spring semester. Entry deadline is April 28th, and the festival will be Thursday June 1st, 7-9pm here at the Kingsborough Art Museum.

Cultural Corps Academic Year Internship Fall 2017-Spring 2018

Looking for a paid internship next year? Cultural Corps Academic Year Internship

Currently enrolled students at any CUNY college interested in gaining professional experience in the arts and culture sector will participate in a 24-week part-time work experience over their fall and spring semesters. Students will receive a wage of $13/hour and work 12 hours per week. Prior to starting at their site, students will complete a pre-program training and throughout the year will participate in a cultural enrichment and development series.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be working towards a degree at a CUNY college (Community College, Senior College, or Graduate School)
  • Be registered for at least 6 credits each semester in Fall 2017 and Spring 2018
  • Have a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.5
  • Have earned at least 30 college credits by the end of summer 2017 (24 credits for community college students)
  • Have addressed any remedial education needs prior to beginning Fall 2017 classes
  • Be available to work part-time (12 hours/week) for a period of 24 weeks during the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters
  • Have the proper work authorization required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)

Cultural Corps Summer Intensive
Recent alumni of CUNY (including those who will graduate Spring 2017) with expressed interest in pursuing a career in the arts and culture sector will participate in a 9-week full-time work experience during the summer. Alumni will receive a wage of $13/hour and work 35 hours per week. Prior to engaging with their host sites, alumni will undergo intensive training in key areas of professional development. Periodically, alumni may attend cultural events hosted by partners and affiliated programs. Pending job availability and participant success, CUNY will work with the host site to explore the possibility of extending participant engagement with the site after program completion.

Eligibility Criteria CUNY Cultural Corps Summer Intensive

  • Be an alum of any CUNY 0-2 years out (must have degree by end of Spring 2017, and have obtained degree no earlier than Spring 2015)*
  • Have graduated with a cumulative Grade Point Average of at least 2.75
  • Have completed at least 1 year of full-time work experience or 2 years of part-time experience/internship experience(s)
  •  Be available to work full-time (35 hours/week) for a period of at least 9 weeks starting in June 2017
  • Have the proper work authorization required by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
    *NOTE: Alumni who attend a non-CUNY institution during the time since graduating CUNY are still eligible to apply, though preference will be given to recent graduates of CUNY

New Course Just Added for Spring 2017: ARTS370 Typeface Design

This course is for anyone who has always wanted to design his or her own typeface, but is unsure where to start. Or for those who just love type, and wish they knew more about how it works. The participants will engage with the fundamental methods, tools and principles involved in the making of a digital typeface.

The course will take the participants from basic sketching through hand-drawn type to the digitization of their own, original letterforms. Working with each student step by step through the process of creating a working typeface of their very own, this course will provide a fundamental understanding of how typefaces work both technically and aesthetically, and experience in making them.
